![]() ![]() A group of breeders were saddened by the apparent decline of the slightly larger type dogs with slightly longer muzzles, flatter skulls, and which retained their sporting instincts. However, the fashion for shorter muzzles in the toy breeds, as seen in the Pug and the Pekingese, lead to the domed skull and shorter muzzle becoming more popular and more successful in the show ring. Until the late 19th Century the toy spaniels retained the fairly long muzzle and the flattish skull of the sporting spaniels. The ruby colour was the last colour to be developed in the breed. The tricolours were called the Prince Charles. The Duke of Norfolk also kept the Blenheim type but developed the black and tan variety. Its name comes from the Duke’s residence, Blenheim Palace, and the word is used today to describe the chestnut and white coat colour. The first Duke of Marlborough developed the Blenheim spaniel, a rich red and white dog which retained its sporting instincts and was adept at flushing game. However, it was in the courts of Charles I and his son Charles II that the toy spaniels became well established and their popularity spread, particularly amongst the nobility. The spaniel of Mary, Queen of Scots was found hidden in her petticoats after she was beheaded. Queen Elizabeth I had a ‘spaniel gentle’ as a comforter, a dog popular with noble ladies as playthings and bed warmers. He has been on Prozac as well and does well on it but could possibly wean off that someday. ![]() He is on 2 medications to keep his allergies under control. He gets an allergy shot under his skin given at home once every 2 weeks and he doesn’t mind that at all. Now for what he needs - He is now on daily Vetmedin for his heart murmur which has caused left sided heart enlargement. He is totally willing to sit for a treat! He likes to come up to you for a pet and give you a kiss on your hand. Chester likes to be nearby but not on your lap. He does not need to be crated and sleeps in the big bed or on a dog bed. He turns in circles when he knows it’s time to eat and when he wants to go outside. If only we knew what he was thinking! - he definitely is a joyful boy. He watches all that goes on (unless he’s having a nice nap) and holds eye contact to communicate his curiosity and interest in you. He loves to go outside, go for walks and go in the car. He loves meeting new people these days and is great with other dogs and has adjusted to the foster home’s cat. It has taken a lot of time and patience to deal with these issues and happily, now he is a friendly, energetic, dog who needs to be on medications to stay healthy. Much of this has improved over time with a good home and healthy life style. He also had signs of allergies which caused recurrent sores between his toes on his feet. He was overweight, very scared and withdrawn, with urinary and heart issues. Chester is 6.5 yrs old, came to Lucky Star 2 years ago with multiple issues. ![]()
